i have to agree. i remember when we were doing it for idiotic videos like rick roll and shit. priceless. i think it would be a good idea to reimplement.

Even having a page full of .gifs makes the page load pretty slowly for me. I think links out to Youtube should suffice.

Idea: enable it in your profile or not. I'm fine with it, 'cause my computer can handle it. But I understand and know it can lag the shit out of others' computers. Disabled by default, but enable-able in one's profile. Just to convert youtube.com/watch?v=whatever links to <embed>whatever</embed>.
