Marine dies in argument over football game

HAVELOCK, N.C. (AP) - Police in North Carolina are saying a Marine was accidentally shot to death when he got into an argument with a friend over the Texas-Nebraska football game.

Police say 21-year-old Johnathan Clinton Rodriguez was shot early Sunday after banter escalated with a fellow Marine at a home in Havelock, a town near the coast. Authorities say Rodriguez got into a scuffle with 23-year-old Lionel Loya, who had a gun that went off during the struggle.

Loya has been charged with involuntary manslaughter. It's unclear whether he has an attorney. He was transferred to military authorities who didn't immediately return a telephone message Monday night.

Texas beat Nebraska 13-12 on a last-second field goal to win the Big 12 championship Saturday.

They'd prove to be even bigger idiots if they didn't send him to jail. Can't imagine how the family of the dead dude felt after reading that "Oh it was a mistake, a gun accidentally shot itself while they were arguing so no harm no foul right?"

The shooter was a military personal so the Military is dealing with the punishment not the public courts.

second of all: that Marine is fucking stupid. he got into a fight with his friend over something menial and miniscule. This just goes to show that Marines shouldn't drink and argue with someone over sports.

I know, it's still a judicial system within the military that'll do the ruling, doesn't change the fact that they were a dimwit to announce that it was apparently a mistake. Sorta makes it seem that the Marines are butterfingered.

It was a ridiculous game. I can see how the became angry enough to fight over it. Killings a bit extreme but if you've been torn down mentally and rebuilt into a killing machine then what do you expect to happen.

I was referring to the bolded text. He's part of the military thus making him military personell right?

An argument and a fight are two different things. An argument is only involving words while a fight involves two people having contact of some sort to hurt the other. If it was an argument, the gun would have not "accidentaly gone off."

Actually, there was a big ad campaign back in the 90s because of kids that found their parents guns and either had a close shave with death because of an accidental discharge, or killed themselves/their friends because of not knowing how to use/hold it.

i read about this one marine who was shot on the streets of ny for being in the marines...people are crazy these days
