All of it revolves around contacting customer support and getting them to send you whatever because you've got non-existent defective product. I've never been in a situation where they didn't tell me to send them the defective one. So why does this work at all? Are people stupid now and don't ask for the defective product?

you give them a CC number as "collateral" in most cases giving an incentive to send back the broken one.
^This. Also they try to appease the customer to prevent any low ratings/inquiries from the BBB. Alternatively they will get you to send the product in, that's when you box method. (Where you claim to send the product back but all the get was an empty box) As they can't claim to know if the product was actually in there, they then send you a replacement.

Wow Thats pretty neat haha, then when they call and say it was empty? then what? You tell them it was in there?
The opposite. You rage and ask where the fuck your product went. The key is to damage the box a bit and reseal with shipping tape. They will tell you they'll investigate, call em back in 2 days time and they'll offer a replacement.
