Its a completely new device. Thats like saying that the MOTOROLA XOOM is the next-gen DROIDX... Also, its called the PSVITA aka'ed as PSV
That's not how Sony is selling it. It looks and acts like a PSP on steroids and is the successor to the PSP therefore its the next gen PSP. They call it whatever they want but its just a follow up to the last system we've just ditched the stupid number thing.
By your logic the Ps3 isn't the successor or next gen of the PS2, which it is.
Plus PSV is only its rumored name, all we officially have is NGP which stands for Next Generation Portable. Ergo its the next gen psp.
