Psychologists, What's you opinion on them?

I might go see one soon because I've been diagnosed with moderately severe depression and my doctor wants me to take AD's
but I don't want to so he suggested I talk to a Psychologist, the one my mom suggested is one connected to her work place but I'm leery about going because I feel I may be going for a stupid reason
Also I'm worried he'll tell her what I talk about.

I guess it's just easier to say I don't trust them >->
What do you think of Psychologists?
Would you try talking to one before taking antidepressants
or would you go right to the pills

I went to one a while back because I had family problems to be honest they cannot help you unless your willing to do the change they just listen and sometimes give you advice but the only person who can change things is yourself

I went to a therapist, before.
Mine was nice enough to not share things unless I said it was okay.

Exactly wut skyler said. I had one for 9 years because of being in foster care and whatnot, did jack shit for me. I decided to go to a new one recently with an open mind, bam, with her help planning myself out, I'm finally improving upon my lifestyle/mindset.

I never been to a Psychologist so I wouldn't know.
But antidepressant pills makes you numb depend on how heavy they are..

I agree, No one can really help you but you but meds can help only balance the depression

I never took one of my depression pill thingys.
They were like plastic so i was like ew no wai.

lol, I never took any type of plastic pill....It raises to many questions

Another thing you can do is just go get stoned and think

Well My problems don't have to do with being in love with someone.
A lot of my problems have to do with family and problems I have with myself.

Some are well learned and helped me with depression.

So I think they are great.

While I do Neurology as relates to work, sometimes I do speak to people if they don't have problems which are severe enough to warrant meeting a professional shrink.

Nevertheless, it's upto the person to listen to whatever we have to say, but in the end, most follow what they think is best, atleast around here.

I had to go to a psychologist once because some of the things I say about myself aren't nice. So the doctor puts me on this "medicine" and it ends up making me more depressed than ever. My opinion of psychologists is we may need them in some cases but some of us do not need that help at all.

Nah man, when I got diagnosed with depression i had to go see a shrink. My personal word of advice is don't trust them at first, but try your best not to lie. After you have some experience with him/her decide for yourself if you truly trust them enough to tell them the truth or not. :P

My brother went to a shrink who pretty much googled everything.

Anyways, Therapy isn't bad. I help out friends now, and what not. It's what I do.
Most of the kids in my school, have Delt with depression and stuff, there problems are nothing compared to mine.

Here's the thing. I'm a psychology major. I plan on becoming a psychologist for a few years before getting my medical license and being a psychiatrist. So I'm the man to ask on such questions.

SSRI anti-depressants are relatively safe, depending on your age. I'm personally not for the use of them, depending on what it is making you depressed. If you had a traumatic childhood, you may be able to overcome it by merely talking to the psychologist. If you were born that way, antidepressants may be the only way to go. In fact, it may be an anxiety disorder causing your depression, so an antidepression wouldn't get rid of it entirely.
There are a lot of things that can be wrong, and a psychologist will help you figure out just what. I'd recommend seeing a younger one, since psychology has changed a lot in the last few years, so someone who is up-to-date will be able to help more.

I imagine your psychologist would go straight to the SSRI's, 'cause that's the typical treatment. So the only reason I would say you'd need to see the psychologist is if you think you'll be able to trust them enough to tell them everything that's going wrong in your life. You can ask them if they'll disclose any of this information to your parents beforehand if that's a problem for you. A psychologist isn't going to be able to help you any more than the pills if you don't disclose any information. The more they know about why you're depressed, the more specific treatments and advice they can offer to target your depression, and the better results you'll get. If you're a closed shell, the only thing they can give you is anti-depressants, and there's really no point in going.

I'd recommend going and opening up of course. It is hard to do, and it will require trust, but it's better for you in the long run.

they won't rat you out to your mother because if they do then you can't tell the person anything and that leads to no where. These guys are good to vent to and they will help you out if they can. so if you want to pop pills then take the meds, if you want to bitch for an hour go to the therapist.

I had to go once , i was just too over stressed and i had problems at home ...
he was nice guy,helped me tho ... its not that scary when u hear " u must go psychologist" xD

The ADs that they made me take had absolutely no effect on me for the 4 years that I took them. They recently decided to take me off of them.

Psychology is not what you'd call them most concrete science.
If you a teenager in high school you're supposed to be depress...horomones and all that jazz. Don't take the drugs, don't even go to the shrink if you don't want to. Its more unhealthy for you to be forced to something against your will.

My family on my dad's side (including my dad) has had a history of psychological disorders. So you aren't 100% right.

I have been seeing them since I was 13 and have been on depression meds since then as well. I truly dont trust them as I personally haven't seen any change in my behavior.
