so the app would download the vid and then convert it then save it

It is possible. You should do some research about libraries that help you convert stuff. As long as you know how to download a video manually from youtube, you can do it with a program. Good luck!
There is several add-ons for firefox to download youtube videos to FLV. After you download you need to convert them with a program.
