Oh, if your patient, and want to level a low pokemon pretty fast, go battle the trainers in viridian forest with level 7ish metapods.
I did this with a pidgey level 2 and leveled to 5 by the end of two battles. Also it's stupid that you don't recieve EXP for battles, only rep.
