Of course! I love the field because it seems like the things you can learn and improve on are limitless.
In all honesty, if you want to take pictures as a hobby, just enjoyment, don't shell out thousands of dollars for a SLR.
The Nikon, Olympus, Sony, and Canon mirrorless cameras are fantastic, and produce amazing results, for a fraction of the cost of a big lug camera.
Basically a mirrorless camera is when they stuff the main parts of a dslr into a point and shoot. The difference however is you can find great compact lenses to use with these. Here's a link with more info if needed. Mirrorless vs. Normal DSLR
If you're looking for more than a hobby, I'd say start with a mirrorless anyway. I jumped right into a dslr from a point and shoot, which I never would have done had I known about these.
