I find myself doing it constantly.
I can't explain it, honestly. But I do know exactly what you mean.
I think it might be because your taste buds are just in front of, and sometimes below, your nasal cavities in the back of your tongue. So even though we don't know it, any sort of scent or fume we breathe we get a mouth full of.
And having that rest on our tastebuds when it gets in our mouth lets us taste it.

Smell makes up like 80%-90% of taste so I know thats how it would work but I'm more confused about why my tea taste like fireworks.
